02 · The job

Most of the time a tyre does not need pumping up. It needs topping up — four or five psi, once a month, on a cold morning when you would rather be somewhere else. This is a cordless inflator built for exactly that job, and for the twenty other inflation jobs that turn up around a car, a bike and a garage.

You set the pressure you want on the digital gauge. You clip the threaded chuck onto the valve so it cannot pop off mid-fill. You press start and the motor runs until the gauge reads what you asked for, then shuts off by itself.

There is no standing over it, no guessing, no second trip to the forecourt to check the reading. Power comes from a 20V MAX lithium-ion battery pack, or from the 12V DC cord that is in the box, straight into the socket in the car. A second, high-volume mode moves a lot of air at low pressure for airbeds, rafts and pool toys, and runs in reverse to deflate them again when the weekend is over.

The nozzles it needs live in a recess on the body, so the one you want is not in a drawer at home. Supplied as a bare unit: the battery and its charger are not included, because the assumption is that you already own them.

It takes the battery you already have

This is a bare unit, and that is deliberate. If there is already a 20V MAX lithium-ion pack on your charger for a drill or a driver, it powers this inflator too, and you are not paying a second time for a battery and a charger you do not need. Slide the pack into the foot, and the inflator is genuinely cordless — no lead trailing back to the house, no extension reel, no waiting for a socket to come free.

When the pack is flat, or when the job is at the roadside rather than on the drive, the 12V DC cord in the box plugs into the socket in the car and runs the unit directly. That matters more than it sounds: a flat tyre tends to happen at the point when nothing else is charged. Two ways in means the inflator is not out of action because one of them is.

The trade-off is honest and worth stating plainly. If you do not already own a compatible 20V MAX pack, the real cost of getting started is higher than the price on this page, and you should budget for a battery and charger alongside it.

Set the number. It stops at the number.

The gauge on the front shows the pressure it is reading and the pressure you have asked for, side by side. You set your target with the dial, start the motor, and the unit runs until the two agree and then cuts out on its own. Maximum working pressure is 80 psi, which covers car and van tyres, most trailer tyres, and road bike tyres that want far more pressure than a car ever does.

Automatic shut-off is the part that changes how the job feels. A pump without it needs watching, because the difference between correct and over-inflated is about fifteen seconds of inattention. With it, you can start the fill and go and do the other three tyres' valve caps, or get back in out of the rain, and come back to a tyre at the pressure you set rather than one you now have to bleed back down.

The chuck screws onto the valve rather than clamping over it, so it stays put while the tyre comes up to pressure, and an LED on the handle throws light onto the valve — useful, given how many of these jobs happen in the dark at the side of a road.

Two modes, because tyres and airbeds are opposite problems

A tyre wants a small volume of air at high pressure. An airbed wants an enormous volume of air at almost no pressure. Most pumps are built for one of those and make a poor job of the other — which is why so many households own a compressor in the garage and a separate bellows in the loft.

This unit has both. High-pressure mode drives the tyres, with the gauge and the automatic cut-out. High-volume mode moves air through the wide hose instead, and fills a double airbed, a dinghy or a paddling pool in the sort of time that makes it worth carrying to the campsite.

The same high-volume side runs in reverse to deflate, which is the job everybody forgets about until they are kneeling on a lilo at the end of a holiday trying to force the last of the air out of it. Both hoses are captive on the body, wound into their own channels, so neither is loose in the boot and neither has to be found before you can start.

Built to be thrown in the boot and forgotten

The unit weighs 6.4 pounds and measures 12.97 inches long, 10.22 inches wide and 5.59 inches high — small enough to live permanently in a boot or a van locker without arguing with the load space, heavy enough to stay where you put it. A moulded handle runs over the top, and heavy-duty rubber feet damp the vibration so it is less inclined to walk across a garage floor while it is running. The accessories are the part that usually goes missing, so they do not travel loose.

The high-pressure tapered nozzle, the inflator needle for footballs and the Presta adapter for road bike valves each clip into a moulded recess on the body of the unit. They are on the tool when you need them, not in a drawer at home. It is covered by a 3 year warranty against faults in material and workmanship, and spare parts are held for 7 years, so a worn hose or a broken chuck is a repair rather than the end of the tool's life.

Light on the handle is not a gimmick

Had a soft tyre on an unlit lane in November. The lamp on the handle meant I could actually see the valve instead of holding a phone in my teeth. Small thing, but it was the moment I stopped thinking of this as an expensive pump.

Does the one job I bought it for, properly

I check the tyres on the van every couple of weeks and used to drive to the garage to do it. Now it lives behind the seat. Set it to 42, press go, it stops at 42. The screw-on connector is much better than the clip type I had before, which always blew off halfway.

Bought it for the car but the Presta adapter means it does the road bike as well, which saves a lot of standing on a track pump. Set it high, it gets there in seconds and stops. Nozzles stay on the unit so I am not hunting for the adapter every time.

Good unit, but factor in the battery

No complaints about how it works — it is accurate and the auto cut-off is spot on. But it is a bare tool, and I did not read carefully enough, so it sat in the cupboard for a fortnight until a battery arrived. If you are not already in the 20V system this is a more expensive purchase than it looks. It is also a bit bulkier than I pictured.

Is a battery included?

No. This is supplied as a bare unit, so the 20V MAX lithium-ion battery pack and its charger are not in the box. It is priced and sold on the assumption that you already own a compatible pack. If you do not, budget for a battery and charger as well — you can still run the unit in the meantime from the 12V DC cord that is supplied, straight into the socket in your car.

What is the highest pressure it will reach?

80 psi in high-pressure mode. That covers car, van and trailer tyres comfortably, and is well above what most road bike tyres are run at. The gauge lets you set your target pressure first, and the motor shuts off automatically when it reaches it, so there is no risk of drifting past the figure you wanted while your back is turned.

Can it inflate an airbed, or only tyres?

Both, using two separate modes. High-pressure mode is for tyres — small volume, high pressure, with the automatic cut-out. High-volume mode uses the wider hose to move a lot of air at low pressure, which is what an airbed, a dinghy or a paddling pool needs. High-volume mode also runs in reverse to deflate, so packing away at the end is as quick as setting up.

How do I power it away from home?

Two ways. A 20V MAX lithium-ion battery pack makes it fully cordless, which is what you want on a driveway or at a campsite. The 12V DC cord in the box plugs into the socket in your car and runs the unit directly, which is the one that matters at the roadside when nothing else is charged.
